Epoetin beta is a glycoprotein, specifically stimulating erythropoiesis, activates mitosis and maturation of red blood cells from precursor cells of erythrocytic series. Recombinant epoetin beta is synthesized in mammalian cells, which are embedded in the gene encoding human erythropoietin. In its composition, biological and immunological properties of epoetin beta is identical to natural human EPO. Introduction epoetina beta leads to increased hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, improve blood supply to tissues and heart. The most pronounced effect from the use of beta epoetina observed in anemia due to chronic renal failure. In very rare cases, long-term use of erythropoietin for the therapy of anemic conditions can be observed the formation of neutralizing antibodies to EPO with the development of partial red cell aplasia.
Side effects of EPO:
Approximately 45-60 days in patients who received erythropoietin may be deficient in iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid. Their deficiency is compensated by medication. Also in the process of treatment it is necessary to constantly monitor the blood pressure of the patient.
Direction for use epoetin beta:
Usually the EPO is administered subcutaneously and the initial dose is of the order of 20 IU per kilogram of body weight three times a week, or 10 IU per kilogram of body weight daily. In case of insufficient efficacy of the EPO every four weeks dose can be increased to 20 IU per kilogram of body weight three times a week (60 IU 1 kg per week). With intravenous administration the initial dosage is IU ME per 1 kg of body weight 3 times a week in four weeks, the dose may be doubled. Regardless of the route of administration, the maximum dosage should not exceed 720 units per kilogram of body weight per week. In further support, the dosage is selected so that the hematocrit does not exceed 35 percent by volume. With the use of erythropoietin is necessary to consider that it is essential to provide the body with adequate amounts of all essential nutrients (macronutrients) and vitamins and minerals, especially iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid.
